I remember when I first (or last) saw him play this one live, he had a great spoken word part in the middle, talking about the members of Ace of Base bickering and having some sort of band breakdown and it ended with one member or another imploring the holdout to "get in the fucking van." Very memorable, 15 or so years later.
Too bad the beloved NYCtaper wasn't there as he was with many other Mountain Goats shows, as this one had an Autoclave version that i'm scared to say blew the (unreleased as of that moment) studio version away.
Ah that sounds incredible. I need to check that out and see if it's in the 'Withnail & I' intonation! I have a lot of love for this live 'Autoclave': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQneGlBna7E
Yup--this is closer to what i remember. I can't recall if it was a fully solo song, but it certainly wasn't as poppy as the recorded version, and that last verse had a similar ferocity. Great find.
